Onion tomato chutney is a sweet, tangy and spicy chutney made from onion, tomato and dry red chilis. It is a perfect pair with idli, dosa, Utthapam and vada.
I added here some jaggary for slight sweet ness. Because my family like this chutney as slightly sweet. You can skip it. If you want more sour then add tamarind.

INGREDIENTS OF ONION TOMATO CHUTNEY
- Onion -3 chopped
- Tomato-2 chopped
- Chana dal -1/2 teaspoon
- Urad dal-1teaspoon
- Garlic cloves-3-4
- Dry red chili-2 -3
- Jaggary-1/2teaspoon(optional)
- Water -½ cup or as required
For tadka/tempering:
- Oil-1tbsp
- Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
- Dried red chillies-2
- Curry leaves-5-6
Preparation
Steps of onion tomato chutney recipe:
1.Dry roast chana dal, urad dal till color changes to brown.

2.Add 2-3 dry red chili’s and stir fry till their color change.

3.Then put chopped onions and garlic and stir fry for some time or till the color change to brown.
4.Now add chopped tomatoes, fry for sometime. Switch off the flame and let it cool down.
5.In a mixing jar put all things, fried chana dal, urad dal, jaggary and salt. Blend to smooth consistency by adding ½ cup water, or as required.
for tempering:
- Heat oil, add mustard seeds, dried red chilli and few curry leaves.

2.Allow the tempering to splutter.
3.Pour the tempering over peanut chutney and serve along with idli or dosa.

Directions:
1.Dry roast urad dal, chana dal on medium flame. Keep aside.
2.In the same kadhai fry dry chili.
3.Add chopped onions and garlic cloves and stir fry till color change to light brown.
4. Add chopped tomatoes and saute till tomatoes turn soft and mushy . 5.In a mixing jar put all things,fried chanadal,urad dal, jaggary(optional) and salt to taste.Blend to smooth consistency by adding ½ cup water, or as required. You can add tamarind in this step. My tomatoes are sour in taste so i skip it. 6.your tempting sweet, tangy chutney is ready to serve with idli, dosa, Uthappam.

1. Heat oil, add mustard seeds, dried red chilli and few curry leaves.
2.Allow the tempering to splutter.
3.Pour the tempering over peanut chutney and serve along with idli or dosa.Turn off the flame and enjoy with rice.
